On Saturday I went to the Linden fete. I was meant to meet my friend Karen there, but there were so many people that we never landed up seeing each other. The whole time I was there I kept giggling out loud, if anyone was watching me they would of thought I was a nutcase. I just thought it was so funny how everyone was gathering as much junk as they could carry and dragging it back to their cars in big plastic bags. Stuff that if they were clearing out their own houses would be in those exact bags heading towards a secondhand store or junk heap. People were standing in long queues to get into tents that were selling stuff, this included me. I stood in queues and I came home with a bag of stuff, stuff I most certainly do not need but couldn’t leave behind. But I will say one thing for myself, I said I wasn’t allowed to spend more that R100 and I spent R95! Yes. And I think I got some gems.

First thing I bought were these awesome vintage baking tins. 1 rabbit and I lamb. When I picked them up I had a lady follow me around for about 6 minutes waiting for me to put them down – I DID NOT. I don’t think i’m going to use them, just thought they would make cool kitchen ornaments. I paid R5 each, their original price tags were still on the boxes, R8.49. Wow.

Next I bought a whole mini basket full of Wade animals for only R30. I must say I was pretty chuffed with myself when my beady eyes fell upon these guys. I looked on Bid or Buy to see if I could find any of them and how much they were going for. I found most of them and they were all R75 and up. High-5 score!

The last 2 things I got are going to form part of 2 projects – I have been looking for a while now for a nice sized printers tray to keep all my necklaces and brooches in so they don’t get tangled up. The trays are often quite pricey on the net and in antique stores and they always seem to be too big. But I found one on Saturday for R20 and it’s the perfect size. So i’m going to varnish it up and pack it good with shinys. I will post pictures when i’m done. The second project I thought of when I saw all these white ornaments together. On Thaya’s blog the other day she spoke about a friend who stuck a cake plate on a rabbit and made a cake stand, which I thought was such a cool idea, so I’m going to try make my own makeshift stand. Again I will post pictures when i’m done….

And that is that. If anyone knows of any fetes happening any time soon, please let me know. Nothing like a cinnamon pancake and a bargain on a Saturday morning x x

Hello Whimsies

August 19th, 2010

Look at my little Wade squirrel that I bought online the other day. He’s in his original box and everything, the only other Wade animals I have are wolves and a bambi, these are quite common in antique stores and I have only just recently discovered that there are a lot of different ones out there. I sense a new obsession forming. Oh crap, my poor display cabinet.

Look at this glorious door knocker. Yes he is a wolf. Yes he will one day live on our wooden front door. Yes I love him. Julia Goolia thank you for finding him and bringing him to me. I love him.

*My friend Julia got him from Anthrapologie in NY.

This man’s dog was one of the biggest boerboels I have ever seen. She was totally docile, I was a bit scared when I first saw her, but she didn’t take any notice of us, just walked straight past. This was the first person we met in Cullinan, this man runs a small car garage. He has a black Cadillac for sale. It’s completely covered in dust and he hasn’t seen the owner for over 3 years. I asked how much it was, he said the guys wants R500 000 for it, but  he says it isn’t even worth R30 000. What a strange little character. So if anyone has R500 000 they want to waste and a good dust cloth, get over to this guy’s shop.

After our morningafternoon in Cullinan, we went to the Casbah roadhouse, where we smashed out faces with proper old school slap chips and double thick milkshakes. Yum!

Then we climbed on some horses and I proceeded to laugh for pretty much the rest of the afternoon. Shane on a horse is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. He was sliding around like cooked spaghetti on a shallow saucer. He was bouncing all over the place, so was I, but part of it was because I could not stop cry-laughing while the horses were trotting so I couldn’t concentrate on the up down motion. I definitely want to go again, it was so nice.

Ok so the next picture is one of my most favourite from the day because I look about 27 months pregnant in it hahahaa. I look like a pig on horse as my copywriter so eloquently put it. It looks like just the part of the photo that i’m in has some weird Photoshop bulge effect on it (I hope haha). Ride fatty ride!

Lets take a drive.

This weekend I went to Parys for a wee bit with my mom and dad, who live in Zimabawe, so I don’t get to see them too often, which makes me very sad. We had to go fetch some stuff from there for my dad’s work, so I didn’t have much time for all the shops, but I did managed to gather a few beauties before I whizzed home with my folks and a bag of flipping fatty biltong mmmmmmmmmm. There is a new shop that has opened up in town that has so much cool ‘junk’ in it. I was like a kid in an antique store, ok let me re-write that sentence cause that doesn’t make any sense – I was like an Angie in an antique store. Yes, better.

The beautiful pale blue and brass sweet bowl below, came from there. I love this colour combo, there is something about this shade of blue that makes me feel like a baby bird in a nest of amazing. The stamp on the back says Kendal, Old Foley, I think, unless my eyes deceive me. I wish I knew more about stamps and names and stuff. I guess I could Google it. Yes I could.

I found this pretty deer print, which is a nice add to my picture collection.

And then I also bought this little skunk. Look at her, she can spin all the way around her mini jungle gym. She was hiding behind a bunch of stuff in the store, but I managed to sniff her out and now she’s sitting happy in my cabinet at home. There is no stamp on her, just a mark of awesome.

Picked these 2 sweet little rose and gold plates up for a steal. R20 each. I also found an amazing old school farm house metal sieve, which I forgot to take a picture of, I will post that one up tomorrow…

Happy Birthday Lionel x x

The other day I was looking through an antique store and I came across this little box. The packaging immediately caught my eye and my chubby little hands lunged forward for it before anyone else could, not that there were very many other people in the shop, but  I like drama, so I’m going to make this story dramatic…

There was a wretched storm looming outside and the shop was dark and cold. I could hardly see in front of me, but I still managed to eye out this awesome, for which I had to fight off not 1 but 2 extremely hairy grannies who both looked like they were the result of a night of uncontrollable passion between Michael Bolton and his brother. After I knocked them unconscious I ran to the till with my R30 bouncing out my hand. The person behind the counter grabbed my money and then threw open a secret backdoor which I escaped through. After crawling through many secret passages I came out unscathed, but triumphant in my quest to acquire, as the box so sweetly says, ‘Lionel’s very first party candle holders, aged 7′. The end.

*How beautiful is the box, stamps and postage markings? Ermelo pharmacy rocks!

this beautiful creature was given to shane and i  by graeme and susanne for our wedding. he is a royal copenhagen from denmark and he is one of the fanciest deer i have. i wonder if all the other animals in my display cabinet mock him for being a fancy pants fawn. guess i will only find out when i officially go coo-coo in the head and can hear them talking to each other. man i hope that happens soon. whoo.
